You look up at the clock and it’s almost 7pm. It’s that time to make the calls… you know the ones. So you make your usual preparations. Your computer monitor is scattered with post-it notes with written messages to yourself for encouragement.
- “You got this!”
- “No problemo!”
- “Only 10 calls? Piece of cake!”
You start to psych yourself up, ready to crush it on the phone. You might even do a round or two of jumping jacks or P90-X to get the blood pumping. Deep breath in through the nose, deep breath out through the mouth. You got this!
Ok, here we go. You take a seat and reach for the phone. Wait a second, was that stack of papers there before? Let me tidy that up a bit, because you know, you can’t make calls with a messy work area right? There… nice and neat. Ok, now I’m ready!
Hold up! Did somebody move the printer? I swear, this morning it was facing me at a 45 degree angle. Now it’s clearly at a 47.5 degree angle! No problem, I’ll just move it back. There, perfect! Now I’m ready! You got this!
Finally, you reach for your phone. All of sudden it feels like you’re picking up a hundred pound dumbbell. What gives? You put it down and do another round of breathing exercises. Inhale through the nose… exhale through the mouth.
Then the thoughts start pouring in.
- Oh no, I forgot to do laundry today.
- The dog needs to be taken out for her walk.
- You know, that car really needs a good wash (even thought it’s the middle of January).
- Mercury’s not in retrograde.
- My hair’s not behaving.
- You know what… Let’s just make these calls tomorrow.
And that’s that. The fear of rejection, of what people will think of you, and every other fear strikes. And you become paralyzed. Have you ever gone through something similar? If so, you’re not alone. Most of us have.
What this all boils down to is a lack of self-confidence. Questioning whether you know enough or if you can actually do this business.
If this is you, read on as this post and video we will go over 6 tips that will boost and maintain your self-confidence. With enough knowledge and practice, you will eventually develop the skills to become “bulletproof” as you build your Network Marketing business.
Tip #1: You already possess the core skills to be a professional Network Marketer.
You may not realize it, but life has already prepared you for this. One of our mentors broke it down to us like this.
We are all professional:
- Product Promoters
- Event Coordinators
Think about it. Have you ever invited friends to something? Recommended a good book or movie? Put together a birthday party or other event? Told people stories of how your day or week went?
Well these are the same skills you would use to build your business. Sure, they may have to be refined, but it’s basically the same skills.
If you go in with this mindset, it will make calling or meeting with your prospects more natural and less stressful.
Tip #2: Always invest in yourself.
Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. You may be talented in one thing but have areas that you need to grow and improve on. Just as someone may be more knowledgeable than you about certain topics, it’s almost certain there are topics you are more knowledgeable in than others. Knowledge is relative right?
A mindset hack you must embrace in your entrepreneur journey is, in order to grow your income, you must grow yourself and grow your value. The more value you have to give and share with others, and the more specialized knowledge and skills you acquire, determines the income you will make. Let’s take a surgeon for example. They make a much higher income than let’s say, a pizza delivery person. To become a pizza delivery person, you basically need to have a driver’s license and know how to drive, which almost anyone over the age of 16 in the US can do.
Verses a surgeon who has to go to school for an additional 13 years after high school and acquires specialized skills only a small percentage of the population have. So according to their Personal Value Level, they have earned the right to a higher income.
That’s why majority of successful Network Marketers make the incomes they do. We have yet to meet a successful Network Marketer who doesn’t consistently read books, listen to audio recordings, buy courses, attend events and seminars, and have their own mentors and coaches.
By constantly investing in yourself, you’ll keep increasing your knowledge and specialized skills. This in turn, increases your Personal Value Level and income, and as a result a huge boost in your confidence. So always invest in yourself.
Tip #3: Embrace that you are imperfect and embrace taking imperfect action.
Have you ever taken up a hobby like martial arts, golf, dance, or a musical instrument? If so, it’s almost certain that you sucked big time at first. This is no different for your entrepreneurial journey. The fact is, in the beginning, you will stumble and fall and make a lot of mistakes. A lot!
When this happens, it’s important that you pick yourself up again and again and learn from the experience. Assess what happened. Figure out what you could have done better or differently. Grow from it and whatever you do, don’t give up.
Continue moving forward even if your actions aren’t perfect. Striving for perfection and waiting for things to be perfect before taking action will have a paralyzing effect and you will get nothing done. It’s better to take small imperfect actions then zero perfect actions. Just know you will become better and better until success catches up with you.
What helped us embrace this perspective was by reading autobiographies of successful entrepreneurs. Read as many of those as you can. Two good ones we highly recommend are Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future and Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of Nike. Both incredible books!
When you read what Elon Musk and Phil Knight went through to build their now mega successful businesses, you will gain a new perspective when you encounter your own struggles. They were both far from being perfect when building their businesses and made many mistakes.
So embrace this aspect of your journey and know that, in order to get good, you will be really bad at first. Understanding this will keep you humble enough so you don’t get so tripped up in your own ego when you don’t see result right away.
But when you do finally see results, keep track and celebrate them, no matter how small. This will give you more balance in your approach to building your business and more confidence to keep pushing forward.
Tip #4: Be consistent.
Whatever activities that need to be done in your business, online or offline, you just have to do it. Even when you don’t feel like it. Because what happens is, if you don’t do those activities consistently, especially the income generating ones, you will see very little results if any, and this can actually kill your self-confidence.
So be consistent in your prospecting, whether it’s on the phone or using social media. Be consistent in creating and sharing valuable content for your team and audience. Always be consistent when investing in yourself. Do whatever it takes to consistently increase your knowledge base. Remember, consistency yields results, and results will increase your confidence.
Tip #5: Learn to work as a team.
You know that saying “there’s safety in numbers”? This works for Network Marketing too. There’s nothing like partnering up or tag teaming with someone and building together as a team. How scary would it be having to present to people all by yourself? Especially as a beginner?
Try to look at Network Marketing as a team sport. For example, if you’re strong in establishing relationships and building rapport with people but not strong in closing, find someone who is.
Look for a person who has a background in the sales process, who’s a wizard in closing and most importantly, has a need for your opportunity. Then tag team with that person and go to presentations together knowing you have someone to back you up to cover your weaknesses. This is a great confidence booster knowing you have this kind of support.
Tip #6: Strive to be excellent in everything that you do.
This was a big life lesson for us. Remember this saying, “how you do anything is how you do everything”. Excellence is a habit. When you develop the habit of being excellent in one area of your life, it will translate into another.
One area of life can be a job that you (cringe) don’t really like. It’s important to understand that you will sabotage yourself by doing half hearted work, even in an area of life you’re not too crazy about. Why? Because that is developing a habit of complacency. Not only that, but a habit and mindset that causes low self-esteem.
Here’s a question. Would you feel proud of any work you did knowing you didn’t give your all? Most likely not. Are people who do crappy work respected? Again, most likely not. If you are not respected at a job setting, and there are people at that job that may need your product, service, opportunity or all of the above… then you just shot yourself in the foot. They won’t be drawn to you. We hope this made sense.
So there you have it. If you follow these 6 tips you will be well on your way to developing the knowledge and skills necessary to increase your confidence and create the results that will build you a successful business!
